IMPACT OF FOSTER CARE ON CHILDREN

Negative Effects on Children in Foster Care

Children are placed in foster care for different reasons including suspected neglect, abuse, and drug abuse. The Department of Family Services intervenes and CPS gets involved. CPS' focus is keeping the children safe. When children are removed from their homes, they are placed in foster care. There are long-lasting effects for the children including:

  • poorer physical health (compared to kids not in foster care)
  • mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
  • less likely to graduate from high school or go to college.
  • problems in relationships
  • higher rate of teen pregnancies
  • suffer from loss at a higher rate than kids not in foster care.
  • more likely to abuse drugs
  • 25% of former foster kids receive public assistance
  • arrest rates for male former foster kids are 25%-35%. and 25-50% are convicted.

Due to behavioral issues, age, and availability, some children can't go home to their biological families and have no families ready to adopt. These are our sole focus.

Positive Impacts of Community on Foster Kids

When community members get involved with foster youth, the positive impacts are exponential. There are many ways that we help impact foster children of Texas. With the help of our donors, we provide magical moments to foster youth by gifting for birthdays, prom dates, graduation, and vacations. The benefits of community involvement and mentorship include:

  • developing empathy in the foster children
  • offering time and attention instills a sense of normalcy for foster children
  • learning dynamics of healthy relationships
  • increase in rational decision making
  • less likely to seek acceptance through negative influences
  • stability

Through our programs we strive to give incentive to children in long term foster care to improve grades, lessen negative and unhealthy behaviors, and nurture success as adults.
